Google Logo History

The Transformation of Google's Iconic Logo: A 20-Year Evolution

For two decades, the world has been familiar with the iconic Google logo - a symbol of simplicity and innovation. Despite its various iterations, the logo has retained its minimalist charm.

The Early Years: Google's First Logos

In its early days, Google had two "first" logos. The original one featured a hand and the company's original name, BackRub, in red font. When the company rebranded to Google in 1998, the logo was simplified to "Google!" in multicolor.

Interestingly, the initial logo predates the famous name, BackRub. At first, co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin called their web crawler "BackRub," reflecting its function of searching through backlinks on the internet.

Some sources credit Page for designing the first logo, while others claim it was Brin's work using a free image editor called GIMP. Regardless, it was not a polished design.

In 1999, Ruth Kedar, a former Stanford assistant professor, was hired to improve the logo. She presented several prototypes, with the eighth design eventually chosen for its simplicity and representation of Google as more than just a search engine. Kedar also rearranged the primary colors to emphasize Google's unconventional approach, giving the logo a youthful and energetic feel.

Finally, in 1999, Google's official logo was unveiled.

The New Era: 2015 and Beyond

In 2015, Google's logo underwent a major transformation. While maintaining its signature color scheme, the typeface was changed to Product Sans, a custom schoolbook-inspired font. The company also introduced various logo variations, such as a rainbow "G" for the mobile app and a microphone for voice search.

The new logo may appear simple, but it signifies a significant shift for the company.

The Rise of Google Doodles

Google Doodles, the creative and beautifully designed variations of the traditional logo, are a fun and interactive way for the search engine giant to celebrate special events and holidays. While they may seem like a minor feature, they are the result of a continuous and ever-evolving process.

The team responsible for designing and implementing these doodles is always pushing for innovation and adaptability, keeping up with technology and design trends. Since its debut in 1998, Google Doodles have become an integral part of the company's branding and identity.

Meet the Talented Designers Behind the Doodles

From simple designs to elaborate animations, each Google Doodle is meticulously crafted to add a playful touch to the search page. But who are the masterminds behind these iconic doodles?

The Google Doodle team comprises talented individuals who work passionately to create these captivating designs. Their creativity and dedication have helped make the doodles a beloved feature of Google's brand and identity.

As we appreciate the evolution of Google's logo and the growth of Google Doodles, one can't help but wonder what the future has in store for this pioneering and ever-evolving company.
