Pathology

Chronic, progressive disease affecting large vessels, including the aorta and its branches, is a form of pathology.

Aetiology

This pathology often affects young to middle-aged Asian women, aged 15-30 years, representing the peak population affected.

Symptoms

  • Claudication pain
  • Feeling systemically unwell

Signs

  • Loss of pulses
  • Bruits
  • Tenderness over palpable arteries

Investigations

Bloods: FBC, raised ESR, and anemia.

Treatment

  • Medical: Steroids, immunosuppression, and angioplasty.

Complications

  • Renal artery stenosis
  • Hypertension

Prognosis

The prognosis for this pathology is poor if end organ involvement is present.
